How come 1000 kilograms is refered to as a tonne and not a megagram?

like in computers kilo - mega - giga - tera etc

Answer:
Hey wake up:
The above statement will not help:
"The entire metric system is a bogus diversion and source of confusion so it is easy why they try to relate to to things people can understand. "
The metric system is the international ISO system. Every nation on Earth was able to learn it, to implement it and to learn about its many many advantages and to use it in daily life.
Except one "island" calling itself a "great nation".

Are you aware of the following facts?

- The Apollo program was engineered, planned and operated using the metric system. The lunar astronauts used kilometers meters and centimeters once they were on the surface of the moon.
- The inch, and therefore also the foot are based on the ISO meter.
- The widening gap of engineering and science knowledge between US students and Chinese students is due to a widespread "illiteracy" of ISO units of measurements and the decimal system associated with it.

Why make it complicated when the easy implementation of those units have been so successful in Europe and Japan for decades?

There is no need for a "megagram" because we have the (metric) ton, which is the international ton used by all nations - except USA.
Because it is close to an English ton and they just can't get away from that. The entire metric system is a bogus diversion and source of confusion so it is easy why they try to relate to to things people can understand.
its silly isn't it, sense 1000 keys is closer to 2200 lb's. the real reason and answer to your q. is when your bussness has grown to that big that your are ordering your product by the ton (and it doesn't matter what kind of product it is. same for all) but the people you order from don't speak good english and dont have any idea how to convert kilos to lbs you think your are gitting 200 lbs for free but your not your suplyers may not speak good english but there not stupid you are still paying for the full lot . let me give you an example. I was buying a certin comodity by the kilo (2.2 lbs) when out of nowhere I was approched by a man with a 4 day beard and smelled like a cross between aqua-velva and coffee/donuts and asked me if I could sell him a pound of my white flakey type product at first I said sure. I figured I'd just break a key in half, me being the kind of guy that don't sweet the small stuf but then this rookie novice wants to see it weighed. like i'm going to rip him off so I got pissed off I didn't have time for this BS think what in hell am i going to do with that extra oz. so i told him OK go get your scale and meet me in the mens bathroom in 15 minuts be in the center stall I added. he left and I went thriugh customs but I felt like there was a lot of cops looking at me and I just forgot to go to the mens room he is probally still waiting for me you see this is why we call a 1000 keys a ton and sell 1/2 kilos instead of pounds.
The name tonne is coming from a lower latin word TUNNA which came itself from a celtic word TONNA meaning animal skin. It became TONNE in french and gave tonneau for example, a drum to contain wine. A tonne was a kind of skin bag to transport water. Some were pretty small other very big and probably weighting around a tonne.
It then became a weighting unit, by extension. It passed from french to english through the normand during the early middle age and gave tons in english.
I always thought that 1000 kg is referred to as a Megagram (Mg), until I saw this question! Personally, I think Megagram and tonne are interchangeable terms. It's just that one term might be more convenient to use than the other depending on the situation. The term, 'Megagram' might not be used in practice; but if, for example, you're using it to perform calculations, I think it might be less confusing, especially if you're particularly familiar with the kilo, Mega, Giga, and Terra prefixes.
