In a Hydro-treater it refers to the 'Hydrogenation' of a hydrocarbon process stream containing Sulphur and other undesirable compounds. The process involves reacting the process stream in a catalytic reactor (generally a Platinum catalyst) at high temperature with Hydrogen gas.
Sulphur compounds convert to Hydrogen Sulphide and Nitrogen compounds are converted to Ammonia.
Also In the process, Aromatics and Olefins become saturated compounds.
(Some conversion of Gas Oils to ATF (Aviation Turbine (Jet) Fuel and lighter components also occurs).
The stream is cooled and the Sour gases are separated from the hydrocarbon liquids which go on to be processed into various products including de-sulphurised Diesel and Gasolines.
