Actually, the construction methods used in hot areas were the air conditioning methods. Earth building techniques like adobe can keep the inside of the house cool. The earth acts a thermal mass equalizing the temperature. Or something. I'm an electrical engineer. I could probably figure out the insides of a modern air conditioner, but my science on why earth building makes the house cool is sketchy.

And for the record, there is no such time as "before BC". BC is any time before the current era.
Ancient A/Cs extinct long time ago.
