Why are dimensions so important in engineering drawing?
Answer:
Despite some of the patronising answers, this is a perfectly reasonable question. The purpose of an engineering drawing is to provide a person(s) with the information they require to manufacture a part that is fit for design function.
If that person is skilled and experienced in the art, it is possible that no dimensions are required. e.g. a sketch of a bracket with a note underneath saying 'Make bracket fit shelf in kitchen'. That is a perfectly acceptable engineering drawing if it results in the desired outcome.
Increasingly in industry, drawings are only used for manually quality checking components because machines are now directly programmed from 3 dimensional computer models created by the designer.
lol! So you can get the right sized parts.
come on! you can't think of that yourself. if its a building, everything will be wrong dimensions, needs to fit in the lot size, and just like the other person if you're building it you need the right dimensions to buy materials.
The other reason if it wrong in one part of the drawing, then possibly the fireplace you put on wall, may not fit because the measuremetns were wrong.
it serves as the basis/reference for fabrication to create parts
wow.. i cant believe i answered that.. what a waste of time.
Watch Spinal Tap the movie...when they made an error in dimentions a dramatic stonehenge prop, became a small statue that was almost crused by a dwarf.
to make something, and be able to remake it when it breaks.you have to design and build within a specific tolerence and size or else things won't fit.
without engineering dimensions drawing seems to be a child's board!!
