On PVC pipes, what does SDR mean?

Answer:
*Standard Dimension Ratio - SDR
It is common to use the "Standard Dimension Ratio" - SDR - as method of rating pressure piping.
*SDR-21 only goes up to 8" dia, SDR-26 goes up to 24" dia, in which case a 16" pipe would have an ID of 14.696".
*The SDR is the ratio of pipe diameter to wall thickness and the SDR can be expressed as

SDR = D / s (1)

where

D = pipe outside diameter (mm)

s = pipe wall thickness (mm)

A SDR 11 means that the outside diameter - D - of the pipe is eleven times the thickness - s - of the wall.

with a high SDR ratio the pipe wall is thin compared to the pipe diameter
with a low SDR ratio the pipe wall is thick compared to the pipe diameter
As a consequence a high SDR pipe has a low-pressure rating and low SDR pipe has a high-pressure rating.
*PVC SDR Series pipe shall be manufactured in strict accordance to the requirements of ASTM D2241 for physical dimensions and tolerances. Each production run of pipe manufactured in compliance to this standard, shall also meet or exceed the test requirements for materials, workmanship, burst pressure, impact resistance, flattening, and extrusion quality as defined in ASTM D2241. This pipe shall be produced in IPS diameters to either: SDR 21 (3/4"–8" sizes 200 psi @ 73F); SDR 26 (1"–24" sizes 160 psi @ 73F); or SDR 41 (18"–24" 100 psi @ 73F) as specified. All belled end pipe shall have tapered sockets to create an interference type fit, which shall meet or exceed dimensional requirements and the minimum socket length for pressure-type belled sockets as defined in ASTM D2672.
I believe it means: Sewerage, drainage, and rainwater.
It means Standard Dimension Ratio. It is found in ASTM D2241. It pertains to a particular series and means the ratio of the outside diameter of the pipe to its wall thickness. It is also referred to as DR which means Dimension Ratio ..it means the same thing. A given SDR means that some properties of a pipe will remain the same regardless of diameter .. like pressure rating, stiffness .. etc.
SDR - Standard Dimension Ratio

Diameter of the pipe divided by the wall thickness
