Nova is the Latin word for "new thing." It has a variety of meanings in different contexts. I owned a Chevy Nova many years ago. The most common use is probably "exploding star."

2. The remnants of a low mass star that has shed its outer shells, leaving behind a dense core that collapses under it gravity into a white star. The event of the star's destruction.
