Why is a AAA battery called so?

Answer:
It started after world war 2 when they standardized battery sizes. They started with A = small, B = medium, C = large, D = very large.
While the C size and D size survived the last sixty years, you can not find the A size and B size anymore.
Because energy density and efficiency was increasing, smaller sizes were feasible. Smaller than A became AA (widespread today) smaller than AA became AAA.
There is also an N size 1.5V cell.
These are classifications given by the american institute for batteries based on various considerations like size, power, volts etc.
AAA battery" may also be an abbreviation for "antiaircraft artillery battery"

AAA Batteries
NiMH AAA BatteriesAn AAA battery (pronounced "triple A") is 44.5 mm long and 10.5 mm in diameter, weighing around 11.5 grams. Output of alkaline batteries in this size is 1.5 volts, 900 to 1,155 mA·h (3240 to 4158 coulombs). Modern nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries of this size can store up to about 1000 mAh, with an output of 1.2 volts.

The battery is also classified as LR03 (IEC), 24A (ANSI/NEDA), R03, MN2400, AM4, UM4, HP16, or micro.

It is commonly used in small electronic devices, such as TV remote controls, MP3-Players and digital cameras. Devices that require the same power but a battery that has a greater life time usually choose the AA battery type.

The AAA is also available in a PCB Tagged version, 10.5mm x 43.7mm, weighing 13g. These tagged AAA batteries are NiMh rechargeable as such will charge from the PCB they are soldered onto.
