When will superconducting transmission wires come out?
Answer:
Most likely, they would have to be made out of a high-temperature superconductor, cooled with liquid nitrogen. For a long line, this would be extremely expensive. The equation for the energy lost in a power line is (energy)= (resistance)(current)^2
Note that voltage is nowhere in this equation -- we can jack up the voltage in a power line all we want, at about 95% efficiency, using big transformers. I don't see why we would need superconducting power lines if we can just raise the voltage some more, and air is such a great insulator.
they already are.
but they have to be real cold.
i mean, really, really cold.
but if i remember correctly, they are currently being used in at least one particle accelerator.
as for wires to your house, there is not currently a estimate on that.
Probably never, i dont know why cant they just jack up the voltage.
We need moar voltage.
Not any time soon, in order for a metal to become a super conductor it has to be cooled to 0 degrees Fahrenheit, which would not be thesable on transmission lines.
