What is the differenece between ATE's and standard test equipment?

Answer:
From my research I have found the following websites that may help you.
The answer to your question may depend upon what type of equipment you want to test.

ATE is very specialized for the task, such as testing production electronic equipment. It is set up with computers. In ATE, general purpose test equipment is used in conjunction with custom gear to make it even more automated
ATE equipment that I have seen had "bed of nails" fixtures with many spring-loaded probes that made electrical contact with the test points on a printed wiring board. All necessary power supplies, input signal generators and loads were connected and the board was operated through its complete range of functions while its performance was evaluated by computer.
