What's the advantage of mass production to custom production? And what exactly are both of those?
Answer:
"Custom" production need not imply that a thing is "hand made" (above), although it certainly could. It implies only a limited run as compared to "mass" -- a term that varies widely depending upon the product in question. Neither does mass production assure "poor" quality (also above). That's a function of tool design and process control.
Much of the discussion of advantages/disadvantages are economic. For example, "mass" production ought to provide the cheapest possible unit cost, but usually requires some sort of significant capital outlay for "hard tooling". A "custom" run may involve a higher unit cost, but a cheaper "soft tooling" for manufacturing. "Hard" tooling will also hold together a good bit longer, so over time, you can amortize that cost over a lot more units.
Mass production and its associated tooling costs imply a commitment to actually selling the higher volume of units for which the more expensive tooling has paid. Soft tooling may amortize sooner, and as a result, there's somewhat less risk if you don't meet your projected sales.
"Custom runs" can be used for prototyping before the high cost of tooling for mass production occurs. Especially if there is a reasonable possibility that the design of the unit in question must change, it will often be far cheaper to hand make something or soft tool it than to take the risk of building the mass production tool and having to scrap or modify that expensive tool.
mass production if producing the exact same thing over and over again the advantage is that it can be done using a machine or by hand however it is easier and faster. custom production is when its all handmade and not just the same product they are all original works not copies
mass production means setting up machines and processes to produce thousands of the same item very quickly - they are all identical. Advantage is low cost of production and speed. Disadvantage is quality may be poor. Also prift margin low and lots of competition: workers poorly paid. Easy repair however bcause spare parts fit all items.Custom means each item is made uniquely by craftspeople specialised in thier trade. Advantage is quality is high and profit is high, disadvantage is slow speed of production and possible inability to repair. Worketrs and material cost a lot usually.
hello hi nice to meet you the advantage of mass production is that there is more of one item custom production is less of what is done in mass production that is the difference between the 2
You can make a lot more units with mass production.
