Why can we not use Mobiles phones at petrol's stations?

Answer:
Supposedly because there is a risk of electrical discharge (static) that might ignite the petrol fumes, but this has been proved to be virtually impossible to do with a mobile phone, but be careful if your wearing a nylon shell suit coz they are lethal!
danger of electrostatic discharge which would ignite the gasoline
because you could be making the bigges petrol bomb going. Did you not read how that car bomb was found. Car filled with petrol cans etc and a mobile phone, so all it would have took was a call to the mobile which could set off a spark, to then ignite the petrol!!
There was a BBC 2 programme a few months back called Mythbusters that disproved this theory.

Alledgedly, the phone would heat the air and therefore fuel vapours causing them to ignaite. They did severals tests and found that it was impossible for the phone to create enough heat to ignite fuel vapours.
ther is a tiny ( and i mean TINY) risk that it (the phone) may produce a spark!
obviously not what you want in a petrol station!
A billion to one chance that the 'petrol to air' mix will ingnite at the mearest spark!
Danger of electrostatic discharge or danger of some other energy discharge of the energy stored in the phone battery or transmitted. In any case, the danger is way way way exagerated.
However unlikely it may seem, a spark could set a fire
going, with catastophic consequences!
The fear mongers have convinced TPTB that a cell phone can emit a signal strong enough to induce a current in gasoline dispensers which could spark and cause a fire.
I go to Canad a ALL the time, and they always like, scream at you to get off your phone. The reason is because it is disrespectful, and they don't know who you could be talking to. You can't really keep anything private when your in front of them because there's been so many terrorist things going on. They just want to make sure you're not talking to anyone you're not supposed to.
kabOOM
The phone may (millions to one chance) ignite the petrol by an electrical discharge.
any electrical device can spark and ignite the fuel
It,s a source of ignition, and as such, it could cause an explosion. A petrol station is a hazardous area. Therefore "Any" apparatus capable of producing enough energy to cause a spark, and a mobile phone has enough energy. Must not be used.
fear of igniting the fuel.(not true!)
Like most of your previous comments mention, there is an infinitesimal chance of causing an electrically induced explosion.

What about the millions of vehicles that pass through these places, all of which are producing high tension sparks via wiring. hundreds of thousands OF THESE LEADS LEAK.

Why then do these discharges not kaboom service stations.

I'll tell you why.

There IS no danger from phones. The companies that own petrol stations spread this rumour so that their premises don't get clogged with people who come off the motorway not t buy fuel, but to just (SAFELY) use their phones.
I go along with most of the answers so far, but I remember that when I was in Oman, the Omanis would use their lighters and light up their ciggies in a petrol station! And we all know the dangers of smoking, lol.
