Your professor would have a list of possible sponsors see what he says.
Use local telephone book and call various possible places, like large garage, even large manufacturers.
Put an advertisement in local paper. Contact wealthy people to sponsor you. Form a group to do this endeavour and have people contribute to the endeavour, lots of people donating only small amounts of money.
Ford sponsors a "Car of the Future" project. I know Georgia Tech has one.
I believe that engineers have joined NASCAR racing teams (and even raced!).
