Household materials used for soundproofing.?

Answer:
The number one household material used for soundproofing is carpeting. If you don't get enough from a carpet on the floor try adding more to the walls and ceiling.
Just about any soft material will absorb sound like curtains and such. If you're looking to set up your own sound-proof room, I remember seeing a musician who had used egg-crates all over his wall to make a 'practice room' for his band. I have no idea how well it worked but in theory it should help.
