Gasoline is/was a by product when making diesel fuel, is the same true in reverse?
Answer:
This is easily found by a quick google search. But basically, after much refining, and cracking of the heavy products, a 55 gallon barrel of oil yields about 25 gallons of gas.

Your basic premise was wrong: Herr Diesel designed and engine that could run on peanut oil. What he didn't realize at the time was the vast difference between how much was needed for his engine to be a commercial success, and how much was readily available. Petrol (or gasoline as you call it) was being used for decades before the Diesel invented his engine. Diesel oil (the fuel for the engines) had to be invented, because peanut oil was not commercially viable. As a point of interest, I have a diesel car which I run on maize oil, sometimes sunflower oil. I get a return of about 50-60mpg, and it's very good for the environment, too. Here in England our fuel is taxed @ 80%, so it's illegal to do, unless you declare your tax.
Incidentally, LPG is a by-product of digging for oil, and is a cheap way to power petrol (gas) cars, but you need a few modifications, including a separate fuel tank.
