Interesting question about nothing to machines...;P?
Answer:
Probably the earliest example of a metal machine (rather than simple tool or weapon or pot) would be Hero of Alexandria's Aeolipile.
In this design, a metal sphere with two outlet pipes at a tangent to the sphere is suspended above a fire. Water is placed in the sphere, and as it is heated and evaporates into steam it escapes from the pipes, causing the sphere to spin.
Hero lived around 150BC. In his day, this device was merely a curiosity, as it does nothing useful whatsoever. It is, however, a precursor to the modern steam turbine, as used in steam engines in the 19th century and modern power stations.
The metal used would almost certainly have been copper, but bronze and iron were also available to the ancient Greeks.
I cannot answer in a few words without making a lot of assumptions.
Lets begin with the definition of machine. To me, a machine is an elaborate tool with a purpose. A rock can be used as a hammer, but I would not call it machine. The key word here is elaborate. I may assume complexity. When the first machine was made should be lost in the mist of prehistory.
Lets continue with your definition of metal. Before the sixteen century, nobody knew how to work the metals. At the time gold and silver were valuable because they could produce reliable tools and machines, and there were no real substitutes. Steel was known, but it could not be worked as we do today, so it was less than reliable. Other metals were either too brittle or expensive to work. Of course, the humanity has learn how to work the metals since.
How we started to use technology ? Well, humans need food, shelter, entertainment, other things. It takes work to produce those things. Work can be more productive with better tools and machines. Such need, and the changing needs of society, has driven progress, has drive the different advances in machinery.
The first metal machine was probably something to bang with, and possibly someone elses head lol. Need to leverage our bodily capabilities is what propels technology.
