Which is better chemical/petroleum engineering or nuclear engineering? Please list pros and cons of each.?

I am going to be a first year engineering student this fall and need to decide a major by the spring of 2008. I am stuck between these two choices. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:
I would say chemical engineering is a better pick. For job seeking perspective, you will have many opportunities having an degree in chemical engineering degree. If you like chemistry, go for it. The most important thing is to do what you enjoy.

I was majoring in aerospace engineering, but recently switched to environmental engineering. I don't see myself enjoy designing fighter jets or rocket missiles. But I certainly love to help making our planet a better place to live. That's why I made the switch.

Don't focus on the good pay, but focus on how to help our fellow humans using our engineering knowledges, then you will certainly enjoy being an engineer!!

Good luck and God bless!!
Chem E's deals with all aspects of chemistry (inorganic, organic, general, biochem, etc.) Chemical Engineering Majors also make the most money out of all engineering fields coming out of college and they are usually based at oil and fuel manufacturing plants (usually in the Gulf states like Texas, Canada, and Chevron hires employees in California too). Nuclear Engineering is a bit more obscure and deals with a combination of physics and chemistry and atomic theory and dynamics of all sorts. These jobs are located in the US Heartland, the Gulf and the Southwest generally.
You should do what you're good at or what you like. Since I get the impression that you want to work with oil companies, I would think a Chem E. degree would be more fit.
If you enjoy working with the building blocks of matter.
I would say if you are more math and physics oriented, go nuclear. If you are more analytical and chemistry based, go Chem E.
Worst case scenario: you switch majors within your first 2 years, and you won't fall behind on your graduation schedule since both majors have fairly similar intro classes.

As of right now, I think Chem E is one of the most promising majors, especially considering the alternative fuel dilemma we are facing. I am an Industrial Engineer but my best friend is a Chem E.
