How do you take the metal part of the light bulb out of a socket if the glass is completely broken?

I use needlenose pliers. You have to be carefull though not to bend the alluminum part too much. Wiggle it loose from the socket first, then crank it around. Oh yeah, turn off the electric first, too. OOWWWWW!
First, turn off the circuit breaker in the fuse box for that room so there is no power to that light bulb. Or, unplug the lamp if that's easier. Let the whole thing cool so the metal bulb base and socket shrink away from each other.
Next, put on a pair of gloves and get a pair of pliers. Grip the metal base of the light bulb and gently turn it to the left ("righty-tighty, lefty-loosey"). You may have to wiggle it a little back and forth until the bulb base begins to turn out.
The best I have heard was use a potato. Cut a potato and push it onto the broken glass and then turn.
Call my hubby. lol Or try a potato and make sure the light is off.
I've had this problem.
I take a flat screwdriver, big enough to get a good grip in the casing and shove it in and twist it out.
(Don't do it while switched on will you ??)
Unplug the lamp and/or shut off the circuit breaker!
Take a large potato and cut it in half. Jam one of the halves into the socket nice and tight. Then slowly twist the potato to remove the broken part of the bulb.
AND PLEASE BE CAREFUL
okay first shut the power off to the socket. you should probly be safe and do so by fuse box, but if now the flip switch is fine. if you don't know how to cut the power off then do not attempt to take the light bulb out! and if you do/did shut the power off then just grab some plyers and twist it that way. i've also been reduced to using tweazers once. but plyers may be the best way to go. goodluck
the o stand by of a half of a potatoe always worked for me.
just cut a potatoe, and twist it on the fixture (unplug it first), and then when you untwist the potatoe you should have the metal part come out with it.
I've done this before...Just get a grip of some sort, like a rubber glove or something, put it over your three fingers, stick it in the metal part and twist to the left like normal. OR if you have small fingers, you can even carefully grab on to like the side of the metal part and turn it to the left, and it will unscrew normally. The second way is a little better as you'll definitely get it.
First and most important: UNPLUG THE LAMP. If it is a hard wired light such as in the ceiling - trip the circuit breaker off.
Use a pair of needle nose pliers to reach inside and gently twist the lower portion of the glass that supports the conductors that the filament is attached to. If the base is real stubborn, bend the top, metal part of the base inward in several places and grab the side between the socket and the bulb's base and twist it out.
Remember..
UNPLUG THE LAMP or TURN OFF THE BREAKER - don't assume the switch will cut off the live line.
Turn off the power, then grab the edge of the broken bulbs base with a pait of needle-nose pliers. You may have to 'wiggle' it a bit to get is loosened up and started.

First unplug the bulb.
Then place a head of a pair of pliers inside the bulb.
Put your hand inside of the handles (the exact opposite of how you would normally grip the pliers) and push the handles OUTWARD.
This should open the heard of the pliers and press them against the inside of the metal part. Turn the pliers while they are pressing against the inside of the bulb socket. It is tricky to get the hang of it, but it works.
1. Make sure the power to the socket is off
2. Get a large potato ( potatoe, if you like )
3. Cut it in half
4. Jam the half of the potato, cut side, onto the socket, and twist to the left. The broken light bulb should twist out easily.
5. Dry the socket out, install a new light bulb, reconnect or turn power back on, flip the switch and LET THERE BE LIGHT!
if there is no glass, put your two fingers inside and twist it out
