Why not jump on the green energy bandwagon? See what is more efficient in your area, A wind turbine or some solar cells to power your house. It may be pricey but see if you can get funding from your course and shop on eBay for some good deals.
For my senior project we did a remote control car that was had some automated features in it but it turned out to be to much for our team. My advice would be to find something you are interested in and find a project that will allow you to learn more about that subject and still be fun. But don't pick something to complex as it will get ahead of you very fast but don't do something to simple as that will most likely get you a bad grade. Your going to spend many hours on that project so make sure it's something you'll enjoy and keep in mind that you will begin to hate the project before the end but afterwards you will look back and realize it was a great learning experience. Challenge yourself but don't overextend yourself.
