How can I learn to read construction plans in detail?
Answer:
there is likely a checklist from your local building or health department.
most designs are for a 3 bedroom 2 bath minimum, no matter how small you have, so check.
The designs usually go by number of bedrooms, so check with the local building department.
There is a primary, which is a two celled tank, usually about 1000 gals. The first cell acts as settling for solids/grits, the second for just fluid.
if there is a prescriptive design, you may not have to get an engineer to stamp this.
After the secondary, it can flow downhill by gravity to the drainfield or to a pump chamber to go to the drainfield.
The drainfield is sized according to the infiltration rate for your soil or the minimum set by the jurisdiction.
Most systems across the system have a 2% minimum slope from beginning to end.
This will be from the inlet to the outlet...
To design and install a septic system.
On the plans, you will need to show the septic tank, holding tank and the layout of the drain field and/or mound system.
A calculation for the septic system flow rate from the building needs to be done.
Also all invert elevations will need to be shown. The elevation of the pipe leaving the buidling, the inlet and outlet to each tank, and the elevation of the drain field piping.
Also on the plans, you will need to show where the benchmark elevation was taken. Also on the plans you need to show a replacement area for the septic system.
You will also need to show details of the drain field, spacing between pipes, hole sizes and spacing, all pipe sizes. All this is dependent on a soil test which will give the percolation rate of the soil. The soil conditions may be different for where the replacement area is shown.
A detail drawing of each tank will need to be included.
Then finally need a licensed engineer to stamp the drawings so they can get approved by the state.
