A generator set consists of a siesel or petrol engine coupled with a alternator by coupling . when engine runs at a constant speed of 1500 r.p.m or so electricity is generated in alternator stator in 3 phase, 50c/s, 220 volts a.c or 110 v, D.C depending on alternator . Chemical energy of fuel oil is converted to first kinetic energy of rotor which is converted to electricity by the alternator .
A generator uses mechanical energy and converts it to electrical energy. The mechanical energy can be provided by many means-a water wheel, gas/diesel engine, wind turbine, an electric motor etc.
