In an electric cable would gold be positive blue negative and brown the earth?

Answer:
Sounds like you have some very odd 220V/240V cable there.

Should be blue for neutral, brown for phase, and a green (old cable) or green/yellow (anything remotely recent) for earth.

Sure you're not misreading the color on that "gold" wire?
yes
Power cables in the UK have brown as hot/live, blue as neutral and green/yellow as earth. I've had to review power cables from all over and have never come across a "gold" conductor except in an audio cable.
Mostly in an electric cable Red is +ve in your case Gold, Black is -ve in your case Blue & White is Earth in your case Brown.
Not necessarily
Brown +
Blue -
Never Seen Gold
