In the photoelectric effect what is the relationship between the threshold frequency f and the work function?

in the photoelectric effect what is the relationship between the threshold frequency f and the work function.

Answer:
photoelectric equ is

hf(i) = phi + 0.5 mv^2
incident energy of photon = work function + KE of electrons
------------------------------...
the work function of any metal is Fixed. The threshold frequency (f) is that frequency which when incident (its photon) on the metal will just liberate the electrons to the surface level of metal or will be just sufficient to break the surface barrier (binding) of metal and liberate electrons with zero kinetic energy.

so (h f) = phi + 0
phi = work function = h f (you want threshold to be f)
this is the relation
----------------------------
general photo electric equation becomes
h (fi - f) = 0.5 mv^2
at fi = f >>> v =o
fi < f, v^2 = -ve so one can not imagine electron to come out
