Is homework for engineers hard?

I would say so, it is as tough as it gets.
Yes ... If you have 3-4 Enginering related classes, expect about 6-8 hours of homework everyday.
As you have no doubt already discovered, homework tends to be "hard" if it is in a subject that you do not enjoy. As an engineering student I sometimes found the maths and science hard, but more often it was the arts option that was the homework procrastinated over because it did not seem relevant to what I wanted to do.
So "hard" is very subjective. The subjects that you really want to learn are not hard stuff, just challenging stuff.
I never considered it 'hard', it just took a long time to finish all the problems.

If you want an easy ride, don't do engineering.
I'm from the UK and my Engineering qualifications go are an ONC and a HNC in Electrical Engineering. I haven't got round to the degree yet because I went along the apprenticeship route and let me tell you now, doing 4 years of college whilst holding a full time job AND completing a practical skills log is one tough cookie indeed.
As with anything in life, good things come to those who work for them, so with the fruits of an Engineering career being very sweet, you should expect you have to work very hard for it.
