What is "bitumen", why do we use bitumen in road construction?

Usally bitumen is used in the wearing / top surface of the road, more over you can say, it is used in the premix for the metald surface of the road.

Answer:
Bitumen is an oil based surface for highways. We use macadam because it is structurally superior to concrete. It expands and contracts in weather. It is also easier to lay on a rock bed. It has better traction with the vehicles passing over.
bitumen is made of petroleum, the same thing that makes petrol and diesel..

but bitumen is the thickest liquid that petroleum produces and it is not flammable.

the reason it is used for road constructions is because of its stickiness.. it can stick rocks and pebbles together perfectly for a long time..

if we just use pebbles, the highway would just be a gravel road...
Bitumen is a heavy black tar produced as a bottoms product from the vacuum distillation of heavy crude oils. (Tar MacAdam after its developer).
When mixed with gravel it makes a compact road surface.
