Why are Scots people so damned good at engineering?

Answer:
Necessity is the mother of invention.

For the Scots, necessity took the form of of the oppression of England, which made the Scots quite "solutions" oriented. There are number of countries that have done very well because of being bullied by England - Look at the US, Australia, Ireland and lately - India. Had England been more progressive in their attitudes towards the "natives" in these places, they would be the dominant "super-power" of the world today, wouldn't they?

I have found that "good engineers" are rare, and countries noted for their various levels of engineering are that way because they have a culture or environment that nurtures and values the engineering function (you gotta put the Germans at the top of that list...).

By the way - Scottish engineering is noted for...what...?
I do not think they are better than for example the French, English or Germans.
Please read about S. Carnot, Eiffel, W. Von Braun, Diesel, Otto, or English inventors of the jet engine, to name just a few...
