another great idea to use is to put your egg in a milk carton. But instead of filling the milk carton with cotton and soft fluffy stuff, try this idea. Mix water and baking soda together, because when it is dropped those two ingredients make a concrete solid milk carton. But if you use gentle force the ingredents are as soft as milk.
The key to a successful egg drop is to gentle deceleration. A collapsible structure that presents a constant deceleration as it collapses will minimize the chances of damage to the egg. You generally need to have a capsule to cushion the egg with a compression plate between the colapsible structure and the egg capsule.
Don't forget to add stability in the form of nose weight and fins if allowed.
Also, if accuracy is not part of the contest, a drogue (small parachute) will slow decent.
