What do we mean by gabions?
Answer:
Gabions ? Sounds like old ladies that keep talking and never shut up.
They are like big steel cages to stop pieces falling out of walls, cliffs etc.

Gabions or Gabion Baskets are blocks made by encasing rock in a steel mesh. The size of the rock and mesh may be different from area to area, but the function remains the same.
They are a large, porous, stable mass used to hold unstable material from falling due to unstable slopes. The mass of the baskets keeps the material from moving them. The important feature in these is that they are porous. As such, they do not hold back water. This is one of the main downfalls of most retaining walls. The added hydrostatic pressure from water behind the wall will push on the retaining wall more than the material itself. By allowing the water to freely drain through, the gabion baskets do not have to resist this pressure.
