Why is it called "Soldier pile" ? and what are their purposes?

Answer:
I have seen soldier pile used in an application as H-Piles driven at a specified spacing, with a steel plate or hardwood planks placed behind them, acting as a temporary soil retention system.

I suppose it gets its name because the piles look kind of like soldiers standing guard along a wall. That's just my guess, though.
