We need to add current because dc is used to refer to the complete characteristics. For example the term "dc voltage" is used, you could say incorrectly but has become an accepted standard.
I agree, it's redundant. But wouldn't it sound funny if we said 'D current'? More often we just say 'DC'.
Where I grew up everyone always said boat regatta. Regatta translated means boat race, so wasn't everyone saying boat boat race?
