What is the best way to illuminate a non-backlighted LCD?

For instance, is it possible to add backlighting, edge-lighting, or other means of making the display visible in average to dim ambient lighting.

Answer:
An LCD is actually translucent. Non back lit ones are probably painted on the back side though.

I have tried edge lighting and its not as easy as it looks. You have to have the Led/light source epoxied up to the glass to prevent reflection. I also imagine that the darker tint of LCD's would make adequate lighting quite difficult with this method.

Best bet I can think of is to use some Acetone and try to remove the paint on the back side (don't get the Acetone on any plastic, it will eat it!). Then just simply put your light source on the backside.

All else fails there is always "front lighting" :)

Best of Luck
