How does a desalination plant work?
Answer:
Basically it boils the water, thus precipitating out the salts and other minerals.
Very energy intensive process, as you might guess.
Also the reverse osmosis process is used, but it wastes a lot of water.
Desalination is the removal of salt from sea water so that it is drinkable. It does not remove bacteria and viruses so further processing is needed.
The most common method of desalination is distillation although it can also be achieved through membrane filtration. To distill water, you boil it so that the liquid evaporates leaving the salts behind. Cooling the vapours gives you salt free water. You can boil the water with electrical heaters, direct solar energy or even the cooling system on an engine. The latter method is the one used on cruise ships.
i would imagine electricity is used in this, just because to make somethign hot enough to boil, electricity would probably be used...
in addition to that though, it sounds as though electricity can be MADE through a desalination process. Tell your buddy that!
check out the link below, i think its pretty cool. but then, i am a geek.
