Forged rings!!?
Answer:
Absolutely all sorts where the integrity of the metal needs to be very sound.
Its all about the 'flow' of the material when it is manufactured. Forgings have material flow that is very strong and will have even grain structure and there will not often be areas of weakness.
If you made the same piece from a chunk of bar for example, the flow (or grain) of the material will usually run in one direction (down the length) and this can compromise the strength of what you are trying to achieve.
For more information, contact the Forgemasters Association or Sheffield Forgemasters, Hillfoots. Taylor Forge or one of the many UK good guys.
Numbers availabile if you want them.
by forged rings do you MEAN gold rings or rings made in a forge?
Railway tyres(steel forgings) and any other application where you really do need to be sure material strength, ductility and shock resistance are at maximum regardless of cost, for example class1 parts of airframes, engine nacelles, pilots seat where failure could cause loss of aircraft(and all on board).I could go on but I hope you get the idea.
I think they mean, for making chains...
I'm glad LD didn't go on because i was getting bored
