How much bandwidth in MPEG-4 will be required for holograms?

Can this quality of video be delivered by FTTP?

Answer:
MPEG-4 by itself has no specification for the amount of bandwidth required as it is a losely grouped set of compression standards. FTTP today can deliver a few Gbps. If the hologram is low resolution then even a hundred kbps can work fine.

What you are really talking about is the deliver of a 3D motion picture versus a 2D motion picture. Today HDTV (2D) requires about 20 Mbps, using MPEG-2 compression standards. If MPEG-4 standards are used then it can get 2 to 3 times better, or like around 7-10 Mbps. Using more advance compression (beyond MPEG-4) like Wavelet compression will yield another 2 times better or 3-5 Mbps.

To add another dimension for 3D would be 1000 times that, if the additonal dimension is not compressed, i.e. both temporially and spatially. Assuming that you can perform an effective compression for that dimension of x100, then the bit-rate required for the most advanced compression scheme known today for 3D would be around 50 Mbps. Which is well within the capabilities of FTTP of 1-2 Gbps.

So getting back to the original question of MPEG-4, I would say yes; as MPEG-4 would mean approx 10 to 20 time worst then the 50 Mbps that I calculated.

Of course the problem is then not the delivery of the bits, but rather the computation needed to show the 3D motion picture and an effective way to project the images. I would think the equivalent of few hundred Intel Core 2 processors would be needed.
well it all depends on holograms of what, As well when it gets going good we will be on MPEG 6
