Energy production?

I'm doing some interviews about energy production.
can you please answer the questions as much as you know, or if you have any idea about it?
This prject is also about the awarness, how many people are aware of the energy that we use, and how much do you know about it?
If you can give the sources, I will appriciate

How is electric energy produced in the world?
What impact does production of electric energy have on the environment?
Which factors determine type of power plants used and newly built?
What type of power plants should we use?
What is your prediction about electric energy production in the future?

Answer:
I'm telling you what I know or understand, not quoting from a website.

Electrical energy is produced in many ways around the world. All take some form of energy and convert it into electricity. Sources for this energy include: nuclear, coal, natural gas, water, solar, geothermal, and wind. There are probably some I'm missing as well.

Many of the 'cheap' sources of energy which include all hydrocarbon fuels, are not very good for our environment. Some are cleaner than others though. I think due to the much cheaper construction cost of these types of powerplants, they have multiplied.

Nuclear hasn't been exploited as much as it should be I think. There is some stigmata surrounding nuclear power plants after Chernobyl. For the volume of power they generate and the small amount of waste (albeit, very dangerous waste) that they are probably the most environmentally friendly power source that can generate such huge volumes of power.

I live in the western US (not California) and there is currently a new coal fired power plant being designed that will be nearby. The thing that really bothers me about this is that the power it will produce will go to California. California will not allow any more power plants to be built of this type in their state. The whole Not In My Back Yard thing applies I suppose and that is why it's being built here. The emmisions from these new plants is actually much better than they were 15 years ago, but there is still TONS of emmisions into our atmosphere every year.

In the near term, I think we should start building nuclear power plants again to meet the growing demand for power. The atmospheric emmisions are almost zero and the total waste produced is miniscule compared to fossil fuel plants.
In the long term, I think we need to develope solar and wind energy. In Israel, every house is required to have solar cells on the roof to help either provide power to the grid, or reduce the house's load off of the grid. I think that such a shared approach might be closer to the answer that we will need to take to protect our environment.
I think (and hope) that there are other possibilities out there that have not been discovered yet that will prove even more environmentally friendly and cheaper. Hopefully mankind will eventually wean ourselves off of hydrocarbon energy sources.
