How does a brushless ac generator work?

I have a 3500 watt ac generator, and while replacing the diodes on the armature, I got curious, what charges the armature coil to magnetize it? There is no connection between the fields and armature, so where does the charge come from?

Answer:
Residual magnetism in the field.
