As you said follow the target, I am assuming that the target is in motion. This makes the target either an aircraft, surface craft or a space vehicle. Most cases it will be infrared or radar homing, for slower vehicles it could be a beam rider.

Infra red and laser doesnt follow, they aim at what the pointer is pointing at.
It is called an active homing missile. You must have seen in the movies like james bond 007. this fellow explodes right inside the tartget. It normally has a titanium tip that penetrates the target and there is a delay in the fuse that will make the explosion only after getting inside the targets guts.

It is usually called a homing or guided missle. There are 3 main guidance systems in use for air to air use.
1 IR: these missles home in on the heat generated by the target. Either engine exhaust or aerodynamic heating of the airframe.
2 Semiactive Radar: in this case the missle uses reflected radio (radar) signals. In this case the radar transmitter is in the launch aircraft.
3 Active radar homing: In this case the radar transmitter is in the missle itself. This has the advantage that the launch aircraft is free to forget the missle after launch.
