What do I do if I have an idea for an invention?

Answer:
Get it patented at the patenting office in D.C.
Then start talking to manufacturers, get a prototype, and run a focus group (anything you want to know from people, whether they'd buy it, what they'd change, how much they'd pay for it, etc.) to see if people will actually buy it and how they'd want it. Cold call a few stores, major retailers and local mom and pop shops to have them test out how they'll sell (have your friends go and buy them up excitedly - especially at the major retailers neiman marcus, macy's, and so on) Eventually in this process if it's really driven home and marketed properly, you'll hit your marketing niche and start driving exotic automobiles like most business owners.

To make this process really work, you'll need to be good with people. I've done this part for you all you ahve to do is implement it. Everything you need to know is in this book - How to Win Friend and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. He's it summed up:

In the "Techniques in Handling people" section it states (1) Never to criticize (2) Always to compliment and encourage (3) Inspire enthusiasm in others by speaking from their wants rather than your own In the "Six ways to make people like you section it states (1) Show genuine interest in others (2) Smile (3) A person's name is the sweetest and most important sound in that language to them (4) Be a good listener and encourage others to talk about themselves (5) Talk in terms of other people's interests (6) Sincerely make the other person feel important next in the "How to Win people to your way of thinking" it states (1) Avoid Arguements (2) Show respect for the other person's opinions and never make them wrong (3) If you are wrong, admit it quickly and emphatically (4)Begin in a Friendly way (5) Get the other person saying Yes, Yes Immediately (that may not make sense but it goes on in the chapter to show the benefits of how getting the person to agree to two real ideas of yours prior before you get your main intention out makes for a psychological edge when your real idea is stated, Always in terms of what the other needs rather than what you need of course and showing them their benefits, as stated in previous chapters) (6) Let the other person do a great deal of the talking (7)let the other feel the idea was theirs (8) Try honestly to see things from the others point of view (to be honest I study derren brown on youtube all of the time, his style fascinates me and he talks about human conditioning portrayed in terms of patterns of behavior due to said conditioning on his channel4 television site. The patterns are portrayed forthwith because of the conditioning and a great deal of that psychology as well comes from trying to see what the person is going through at each stage of thought as they're doing something. So seeing from anothers point of view has a lot to do with psychology apparently) (9) Appeal to nobler motives (means be ethical, virtuous, and to have integrity because things always seem to turn out better when you do) (10) Dramatize your ideas (Means make them vivid interesting or dramatic for example if you want to say you're wasting money you could literally flush a few dollars down the toilet in their prescence to place emphasis) (11) Be sympathetic with the other's ideas and desires (12) throw down a challenge Lastly in the "Be A Leader: How to Change People without giving offense or arousing resentment" Section it states: (1) Begin with praise and honest appreciation when finding fault with another (2) Call attention to others mistakes Indirectly (3) Talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person (4) Ask questions instead of giving direct orders (5) Take pride into consideration (6) Praise the slightest improvement and every improvement (7) Give the other a good name and a fine reputation to live up to (8)use encouragement and make the fault seem easy to correct, even if it's not (I strongly agree with this psychology) (9) Make the other person happy to do what you request by matching benefits it gives them with their wants - show that they'll personally benefit

And that's the whole book minus the actual real life examples that they put where they write examples of their experience when it happened in real life, It's a very Fascinating book. You'll do very well in life with everything placed here, many people have. Go get 'em.

You'll need a patent and some investors.
