How much does dirt weigh per cubic yard?

Thanks!

Answer:
Good answer, but it depends on other factors like moisture content as well. The range is about right, but 69 pcf would be unusually light soil. Since there are 27 cu. ft. per yard, this would give roughly 2000 to 3000 pounds per yard. Unless your soil has a lot of mulch or peat moss in it, I would use 3000 lbs. for estimating purposes.
Depending on soil depth (and relatedly, compaction) soil density is from ~1.1 to 1.8 Mg/m3 or ~69 to 112 lb/cu ft. Multiply by 9 (cu ft/cu yd) to get 621 to 1008 lb/cu yd.
"Dirt" is a pretty vague word. The weight would be dependent on what the other folks have mentioned, but also on the composition of the dirt. Is it a clay-like dirt? Is it porous? Loosely packed dirt will weigh less per cubic yard than tightly packed dirt.
