What are the different makes of PLC's available?

Answer:
Allen Bradley at one time claimed "PLC" or "Programable Logic Controller" as a trademark. Cutler-Hammer and Square D (Schneider Electric), Modicon, Omron, General Electric, Panasonic (Matsushita), Siemans, ABB, Mitsubishi, Hitachi, Toshiba, AEG are some other well known brands. Some of the well known brands are manufactured by others.
There are hundreds, from just a couple inputs and outputs to some that have 100's of inputs and outputs.
Take a look at automationdirect.com
PLC's and other industrial automation products.
Their PLC's tend to be cheaper but from my use are capable of a lot in a small package.
There are many different kinds and for the most part, any of them work as well as each other, especially if they have no interface with anything else.

If you are looking at a larger control system then some of the bigger names start to come out such as Allen Bradley and Siemens because of the wide range of equipment they offer and because the stuff is tried and tested. Many suppliers of equipment that includes a PLC will have their preferred make and it is expensive and risky to insist they use something else.

Don't believe anyone when they tell you their "third party" equipment communicates well with something else without good evidence.
