How do engineers use the scientific method?

Answer:
Engineers use problem solving methodologies which include an incorporation of the scientific method. Steps in these methodologies include defining the problem, brainstorming solutions, selecting solutions, developing the solution, and testing the solution. These last two steps apply the scientific method. The hypothesis is that the solution will solve the problem. Once the hypothesis has been accepted (or the null hypothesis has been rejected), the solution is implemented.
The scientific method is mostly used by theorists; engineers mostly capitalize on established science.
The scientific method, defined as hypothesis - experiment - conclusion, is used by engineers to test theorems and to find materials or conditions under which the theorem does not hold, and adjust the theory accordingly.
