For an engineer, what is the value of a certificate vs the value of a certification?

I'm interested in the non-IT engineering world. I know that certifications are huge for folks in the IT sector. Thanks

Answer:
In the real engineering world (where IT doesn't count for much), what really matters in the U.S. is a professional engineer (P.E.) registration. There are similar certifications worldwide.

It isn't absolutely necessary to obtain a P.E. for some disciplines. For instance, an electrical engineer designing integrated circuits won't need a PE, but a civil engineer designing roads will need a PE or face going hungry.

I can say that the value of certification or registration is more determined by the value of the individual doing the work. I've seen plenty of PEs who weren't great engineers, and a few great engineers who did not have their PE.
