i am working on a dc flat motor and my knowledge about electronics aint that good. So i want to know what exactly are pole pairs? also how is it possible for me to measure the rpm or speed at which the motor is rotating? the manual says that i can get a digital output signal, but to what sort of equipment should i be connecting to this output to obtain a reading?
Answer:
On any DC motor there are at least two wires (red & black). These are the power leads. Sometimes, more expensive motors have a third lead. This third lead sends a out a signal for the RPM. This is how your computer fans gives rpm data.
The best way I know how to analyze this rpm signal is to splice it into a personal computer three pin fan jack and plug it into the motherboard connection labeled case fan. Then you can go into your bios and get the reading. I believe the center pin is always the testing lead, but check to make sure its not powered with your multimeter first.
After all that said it may just be easier to attach a worm gear and count the revolutions and multiply.
Good luck.
