Installation of a distribution transformer?

Answer:
Distribution transformers are the ones the power company use closest to the consumer. They are usually placed high on a power pole (a black canister), or, if your local distribution lines are underground, they are inside green boxes (usually about 1x1x0.5 meters in size) somewhere near the street or alley of your neighborhood.

Their purpose is to drop the voltage down from about 4,500 volts (or from up to 12,500 volts depending on how your power company has configured the power grid) down to 240 volts (in the U.S.).

These are filled with oil and are completely sealed. The power companies usually don't do any maintanence on these as there are literally thousands of them within their regulatory areas.
