What's the purpose of the underground steam in NYC?

What's the steam for? Where does it come from?

Answer:
I believe to provide turbine power and HVAC for buildings. Not to be a smarta$$, but steam comes from boiling water. Somewhere water is being boiled.

Its used to heat buildings.

It is run by Con Edison.
Underground steam anywhere
only has one purpose.
To heat up basketball courts.
A lot of northern cities have steam lines under them. This is for heat for the buildings and factories to use. It can also be used to power turbines around the city, but i don't recall this when i did contract work for D.T.E. The steam comes from the cities power provider. It is often spent steam from the providers turbines.
