Why are circuit boards green?

It's a chemical reaction between the copper etching and the material the board is made out of. However, I've also seen brown
circuit boards.

Nowadays, you can get them any color. I have had to make a few of my boards black. And for our inventory we to make blue boards if it is to be RoHS compliant
They can be any color. It's the top layer that gives them their color. In the 70s when CMOS was just starting to be used, our company used to require that any PC board containing CMOS parts be red to make people aware of the static discharge issue with first generation CMOS.
