Why do wood utility poles have a cheaper life cycle then steal?

Answer:
The initial cost of wood is cheaper. If you need new poles, wood is more readily available than steel.

Steel is not easy to get. You have to order them way ahead of time. You cannot just call over to the mill ask for a couple of poles. The steel mills are not rolling out steel shapes all the time.

You will need heavier equipment to plant steel poles. Heavier equipment have a higher operating cost. Utilities often have to be relocated due to construction or other reasons.

Wood is easier to cut to size than steel. Wood only needs to be treated at the mill. Steel has to be repainted periodically.
