Quality assurance literally means to assure the customer that he is getting what he desired while placing the order on you. Design your system and work schedule based on this principle. Try to get regular feedback from your customers and evaluate performance of your department based on that.
List daily production of parts available for inspection, and how many of those are inspected daily. Basically, incoming and closed numbers.
Set up roving parts inspections.
List defects corrected, itemized by type.
Document corrective actions taken.
Set up QA audits of production areas. Document findings and corrective actions taken.

Quality assurance has a importanT function of maintainig acceptable quality of products / norms / documentation and testing/reporting of measured data .To achieve these , manufacturing industries maintain certain kind of quality system ,e.g system procedure, quality manual, standards as per ISO-9001. Total quality management under this international standard of quality control is implimented and managed by quality control department . The main aim is to maintain all written documentation act acording to the procedures standardised . Maintenance of quality and minimisation of rejects are main aim . Since you are new to this area, it is suggested that you undergo a short term training in quality control .There are lot many things to be learnt and implemented to compete with international market players.

I have judged my QA department (and staff) by their ability to AVOID mistakes to happen, using their influence in the design stage of the product, and in the manufacturing process.
Result: Judge the QA department based on their achievement in lowering the faults at the end of the line.
