Tips for operating cnc engraving machines?
Answer:
It depends on the cutter and the material being cut. I'm a CNC operator, by the way. The fastest speeds and feeds are while using carbide cutters. For engraving work it'll likely be a small cutter, ie maybe 1/4 to 1/16 inch. Generally, the harder the material, the slower the feed. Cutting speeds are figured in SFPM, surface feet per minute. If a carbide endmill is rated at 1500 SFPM and is 1/4 inches in diameter then it travels .25 x3.141 inches every rev. If you figure out how many revs it would take to make 1500 feet then that's yer RPM. These are usually set in the programs with the S and F commands. The machine has a manual override though and I usually keep my hand on the big feedrate knob until I know a program isn't going to do something interesting, like a Z-axis plunge through the table. (it's rare but it happens). You can always get a copy of the Machinist's Handbook. All this stuff is in there.
1. Read the operating manual.
2. Ask manufacturer representative.
Most the time you get your speeds and feeds from the tooling company.
