Does a two cycle engine require a lower compression ratio than a four cycle engine?

I'm not an IC engine guy, but I would think for a 2-stroke you'd have a lower compression ratio (perhaps around 6 or 6.5). That would give you a little more leeway to prevent pre-ignitions with lower-grade gas; after all, since intake and exhaust happen on the same stroke, you are essentially dumping your fuel into about half of your exhaust stream. Those gases are still hot and consequently, more prone to pinging at the same compression ratios.
You could definitely experiment with smaller heads, tighten the clearances up a little bit and such. But be prepared to give it the high-octane gas.
