How does liquid fuel moves an engine?

When liquid fuel is burned in a confined space (such as a cylinder) the mixture of fuel and air heats up and wants to expand. This will push a piston downward. The piston will rotate a crank shaft which will transfer its rotational motion through gears and shafts to the wheels and will move the vehicle. To be technical, liquid fuel would not do anything other than to stall the engine. It has to enter the cylinder as a vapor in order to be be burned. The fire flash at ignition produces an expanding gas which drives the piston down, as the other respondent has described.
